Katonah Yoga® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 45 years. She and her teachers incorporate classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination — in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being.
Framing the practice, maps of time and personal space are defined and refined. Themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure are incorporated in Katonah Yoga practices.
Katonah Yoga® is organized around three principles of esoteric dialogue: all polarities are mediated by trinity; the universe has pattern, pattern belies intelligence; by virtue of repetition there is potential for insight.
Disciplined techniques are organized for revelation through revolutions.

MEET NEVINE
Nevine Michaan, Founder and creator of Katonah Yoga® possesses a gift for teaching the physical and esoteric aspects of yoga. Many consider her the Teacher’s teacher, a philosopher, a poet; a seer. Her teaching methods are articulated intelligently with meaning and metaphor. Nevine’s practical approach entwines the body, the breath and the imagination. Her unique dialogue and insight is matched by her extraordinary ability to convey and communicate her keen acumen.
Michaan, born in Egypt in 1954, moved to New York at the age of three. In her early 20’s while studying history and comparative religion at Vassar College she discovered meditation. Nevine understood that there is a function(s), a formality and a fit to the universe and that yoga is a tool, a technique- a practice with repetition which gives us the opportunity to participate in life intelligently and joyfully.
Nevine started a daily practice in NYC with renowned yoga instructor Allan Bateman, in the 1970s. She became fully immersed in what would become her life’s work(s). She began teaching Yoga in 1980, and founded the Katonah Yoga Center in Katonah, New York in 1986. Nevine continues to teach in her studio in Bedford Hills, NY and to inspire those both near and far, of all ages and backgrounds.

A Glimpse of KATONAH YOGA®
Life involves carrying weight: responsibilities, emotions, memories and the weight of our bodies. The particular way in which we carry our emotional, psychological, and existential weight forms our postural disposition. Yoga offers an archetypal framework, a revolutionary method based on universal ideals, with which one can reform, re-tune, re-calibrate, and ultimately transform themselves.
Katonah Yoga has been developed by Nevine Michaan and her teachers over the last thirty years. It is both spiritually refined and eminently practical. By synthesizing classical Taoist Chinese theory, traditional Hatha yoga postures and meditation, it provides a clear yet powerful understanding of the mechanics of the body while encouraging increased awareness of the self.
The essence of all Hatha Yoga practice is the postures (asanas). Once the basic posture is achieved, the form of the posture can then be deepened through study and through the work of the breath. As an aid to deepening the experience of the postures, Katonah Yoga employs the vast resources of Taoist thought, a branch of Chinese philosophy, which is several thousand years old. This simple, very clear system of natural laws and correspondences is used in Katonah Yoga as a kind of image bank to help move the mind through the body, and to deepen the mental understanding of the individual poses. The synthesis of Taoist and classical Yogic thought produces a poetry of interpretation which is unique to Katonah Yoga.
